As a seamstress and upcycler, I'm passionate about reducing waste and extending the life of clothing and accessories. One way to do this is by taking care of the items we already own, including our shopping bags. Here are a few tips for making your shopping bag last longer:
Choose a sturdy material: When selecting a shopping bag, look for one made from a durable material like Canvas, Hemp, Organic Cotton, Recycled Polyester, Tencel. These materials can withstand wear and tear better than flimsy plastic bags, which can easily rip or tear.
Avoid overloading: While it's tempting to stuff as much as possible into our shopping bags, overloading can put too much strain on the handles or seams, causing them to weaken or break. Be mindful of the weight you're carrying and distribute the load evenly.
Clean regularly: Over time, shopping bags can accumulate dirt and grime, which can weaken the fabric and cause unpleasant odors. Clean your bag regularly by wiping it down with a damp cloth or washing it in the machine (if the care label allows). Let it air dry before using it again.
Repair damage promptly: If you notice any tears, holes, or frayed edges on your shopping bag, don't wait to repair them. The longer you put off fixing the damage, the more likely it is to worsen and eventually render the bag unusable. Small repairs can be done with a needle and thread, while larger repairs may require the help of a professional seamstress.
Store properly: When you're not using your shopping bag, store it in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight. This will help prevent mold and mildew growth, which can weaken the fabric and cause unpleasant odors.
By following these simple tips, you can extend the life of your shopping bag and reduce waste in the process. Remember, every little bit counts when it comes to protecting our planet and conserving resources.

Here is a recent repair job on a bundle bag, this bag in question had seen better days. The straps were becoming unstitched and the rim of the bag had begun to tare, making it difficult to carry heavy items. Rather than toss the bag and add to the waste stream, I decided to repair it.
Using my sewing machine and off cut of fabric, I lovingly patched up the tare and reinforced the stitch. It took a little time and effort, but the end result was well worth it.
As you can see, the straps are now strong and sturdy, and the bag can once again carry heavy loads without tearing.
Repairing items like this shopping bag is just one small way we can reduce waste and make our belongings last longer. It's also a great way to save money, as repairing is often cheaper than buying a new item.
I encourage you to take a look at your own belongings and see if there's anything that could use a little repair. With a bit of time and effort, you might be surprised at how much life you can give to something that might have otherwise been thrown away.
