All of the personal memory projects truly mean the world to me.
I was given a cub leader jumper that belonged to a father who had passed away, and the idea was to turn his iconic jumper into something meaningful and also functional.
Keeping in line with the Ideal Chaos no-waste ethos, the aim is to make use of every inch of the sweatshirt fabric, ensuring that nothing goes to waste.
I managed to create a few practical things. The Cub Leader’s woggle (badge) on the largest panels of fabric (chest and back) made perfect bottle bags, the ribbing (cuffs) became scrunchies, and I crafted a sleep mask from the kangaroo pocket. The sleeves I used to make wash cloths.
This felt like a wonderful way to honour a father who was always seen with a towel on his shoulder—a practical and handy man whose echoes of leadership as a Cub Leader still resonate.
In this way, we are able to carry our treasured memories with us, transforming a significant garments into functional items that breathe new energy into those memories.
Achieving this while embracing the principles of repurposing and sustainability gives my work a wonderful purpose.
